Ulster County’s 11 Most Dangerous Towns for Motorcycle Crashes in 2023

The absolute joy of the highway. The views of the Hudson River, the Catskill mountains, of the farms of Route 28 and Route 209, and the sublime landscapes that inspired the Hudson River School. The wind behind you. There’s nothing like the thrill of motorcycling, and that’s why so many Ulster County residents are drawn to it, despite the risks.

According to the latest stats from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcyclists are 28X more likely to pass away after a crash per mile traveled than those traveling in a car. Some of the most frequent injuries that happen from a motorcycle crashes can include head injuries (like TBI), bone fractures, spine injuries, organ damage, and road rash. Protective gear like helmets can reduce risks, but motorcyclists are still at great risk if there’s a crash.

We took a look at New York’s Institute for Traffic Safety Management & Research’s Ulster County motorcycle crash statistics to explore these dynamics further. In 2023, 53 people were injured or killed in Ulster County motorcycle crashes. 46 of the victims were the motorcycle operators, and two were not the driver (i.e. in other vehicles), and four were motorcycle passengers.

39 out of 46 crash victims were male, and a majority were between the ages of 21 and 39. 79% of motorcyclists involved in these accidents were confirmed to be wearing a helmet.
