The Most Common Kinds of Car and Vehicle Personal Injuries in Ulster County

Car Crashes

Last year, there were 5,003 car accidents in Ulster County. Roughly 0.3% of these crashes resulted in fatalities, 6% caused moderate to serious injuries, and 15% resulted in minor injuries. They were most commonly caused by distracted or inattentive drivers, animals like deer jumping into the road, the failure to yield right of way, following too closely, driving too fast, or roadway conditions like slippery pavement. 753 of the crashes took place in the Town of Ulster, 698 in the City of Kingston, and 493 in Saugerties.

Motorcycle Crashes

There were 60 motorcycle crashes in Ulster County in 2023, with 44 causing personal injuries and 2 resulting in a fatality. 10 occured in Saugerties, 9 in the Town of Ulster, 4 in Gardiner, and the rest were spread across Wawarsing, Plattekill, Marbletown, Marlboro and more.

Bicycle Accidents

In 2023, bicycle injuries in Ulster County jumped from their usual level of 20-22 to a whopping 36, 31 of which caused personal injuries. According to police-reported statistics, about two-thirds of the incidents were caused by the negligence of drivers, and one-third had bicyclist confusion or error as a contributing factor. It is unknown how many e-bike or scooter accidents there were, although anecdotally, the number of increasing, and they tend to have more serious injuries.

Truck Accidents

There were about 240 crashes in Ulster County that involved trucks last year. About 15% of them caused injuries or a fatality.

Pedestrian Accidents

According to the Institute for Traffic Safety, there were 54 cases where a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in 2023; 1 incident was fatal, and 54 resulted in serious personal injuries. 16 of the incidents happened in the City of Kingston, 7 in the Town of Ulster, and the rest were spread across Esopus, Gardiner, Hurley, Lloyd, Marbletown, New Paltz, Woodstock and Ellenville.
